A piece of land that can contain one player. It can also contain a patch of terrain.
An important exception to the "one person" rule is when standing on gate. When standing on gate, two players can occupy the same place (if one of the players is the owner of the fence in question), which is the one way of letting someone come into your base.
Another way for multiple players to share a square is to have an inactive player log into a square that has an active player on it. Yet another is to stand on another player's stargate when that player uses a hawk to return to the stargate.
