Textile

Textile is one of the nine main skills. It is considered an advanced skill because you need hemp stalks in order to raise it, and these require a high farming level to grow.

Because of its advanced status, there is no outhouse magazine for increasing your textile skill. The 10% increase gained from eating a Gold Radish does still apply to textile though.

Retting

Retting is the moistening of hemp stalks. When this is done with dew, called dew retting, the stalks "rot" which helps to separate raw fibers from the stalks. In Toadwater this is started by laying down 100 hemp stalks in a square to prepare "a Hemp field for dew retting." Each time stalks are laid down makes the field an additional "10% Prepared" so 10 stalks must be laid down 10 times for the field to be fully prepared -- the exception to this is during a gold radish/milk buff.

Once fully prepared, the stalks start to ret immediately. The goal is to break and scutch when the retting hemp field is in its optimum stage as that is when the yield, raw fibers and hemp seeds, is its maximum. The further from the optimum stage, the lower the yield.

Retting Stages

There are about two dozen stages of retting and each stage takes a variable/random amount of time that depends heavily on the humidity. The rule of thumb is the closer the humidity to 100%, the closer the time of each stage to about a dozen seconds (the further the humidity from 100%, the closer the time of each stage to about a dozen minutes). The exception to this rule is the optimum stage duration is 10 seconds for each level of your textile skill (so if your textile skill is 30 you get 300 seconds = 5 minutes).

Each picture gets slightly darker as the field progresses through the retting stages. There are about a dozen retting stages before the optimal stage -- during these pre-optimal stages mousing over on the field will show "Retting Hemp (-)". During the optimal stage, the picture will have a 3D effect. There are about a dozen retting stages after the optimal stage -- during these post-optimal stages mousing over the field will show "Retting Hemp (+)".

How Long Until Optimum Stage

Crunching a few numbers indicates that in very humid conditions, the optimum stage may take a couple minutes to be reached (and in very dry conditions, the optimum stage may take hours...). In 95-100% humidity, however, a square may easily be able to be done in about one metric minute, so be careful in 95-100% humidity!

Breaking and Scutching

Breaking refers to the breaking of the woody tissue of a plant while leaving the fibers intact. Scutching refers to the beating/scraping of the woody tissue from the fibers. In Toadwater these are combined into a process called breaking and scutching which is using a scutching sword on a field of retting hemp stalks to harvest raw fibers and industrial hemp seeds into your inventory.

In addition to Breaking and Scutching at the optimum time, the yield depends on your Textile skill, your scutching sword's level, and your luck!

Hackling

Hackling refers to the combing out of fibers. In Toadwater this is done by using 100 raw fibers (the exception to this is during a gold radish/milk buff or during a gold radish/milk/Tomatoes buff) on a hackling machine placed on the ground (see hackling machine for more info) to produce produces low grade sliver in your inventory. The amount of sliver you get depends on your textile skill and your luck!

You can hackle "Low Grade Sliver" to get "Medium Grade Sliver" and the medium grade sliver to get "High Grade Sliver" -- the amount is reduced during each reprocessing step.

The three grades of sliver can then be spun into yarn. High grade sliver can also be made into rope.

Spinning

Spinning refers to the spinning of combed fiber into thread/yarn. In Toadwater this is done by using 100 sliver on a spinning wheel placed on the ground (see spinning wheel for more info) to produce yarn in your inventory. The amount of yarn you get depends on your textile skill and your luck!

  • "Low Grade Sliver" produces "Beggar's Yarn"
  • "Medium Grade Sliver" produces "Middling Yarn"
  • "High Grade Sliver" produces "Imperial Yarn"

The three "grades" of yarn can then be woven into cloth.

Spinning Wheel

A spinning wheel is used to spin.

The wheel is sold by the shop and must be placed on bare sand before it can be used to spin. Once placed it must be used 1000 times after which it disappears leaving bare sand in its place. Mousing over a placed wheel will indicate its uses which only increase from 0 to 1000.

Hitting a wheel with a mallet will add [mallet level] uses to it -- this can be used to destroy it faster than by normal use.

Rope

"All-Purpose Rope" in Toadwater is used for building docks and boats and making lassos. Rope is created from High Grade Sliver on a rope machine placed on the ground. This produces rope in your inventory but requires a high textile skill!

See the Rope Machine for more info.

Rope Machine

A rope machine is used to make rope.

The machine is sold by the shop and must be placed on bare sand before it can be used to make rope. Once placed it must be used 1000 times after which it disappears leaving bare sand in its place. Mousing over a placed machine will indicate its uses which only increase from 0 to 1000.

Hitting a machine with a mallet will add [mallet level] uses to it -- this can be used to destroy it faster than by normal use.

Increasing Textile

Textile is one of the skills which is part of the Industrial Hemp process, and there are a number of ways of increasing it:
