Is anyone unable to use the new java client?  And if you aren't able to, what's the problem?

I can't use the new client on a work computer.  I am fairly certain it has something to do with admin rights (which I don't have) and the installer wanting to put stuff in the applications data folder.

It installs and appears to load images, etc when started, but comes up to a black screen and empty windows (info center, hoard, etc.).

And it won't work either, so there must be another reason JTWC won't work at work.

Right now I can play (at home) on the new client, but I cannot buy any statues.  The statue window is empty.  I waited for the list to populate, but nothing showed.

I can't see any statues for TW2, either. ..or are there none.

I have the same issue. It sits there for a half hour (literally) and then I check the folder where the images are supposed to be and it is empty. Happens with normal and mobile versions. I think it might be a proxy issue blocking the downloads.

I know the address and port, enough to configure things like firefox connection settings. The way I have things configured the old client worked, but the new one does not. The old client seemed to use my Internet Explorer proxy settings, but I don't know how to configure the new client to work with the proxy.

Yes, that is correct. If you know how to edit a simple .bat file, you can open the debug link in notepad, and add the following (with your settings, of course) between the java and the -jar parts:

-Dhttp.proxyHost=hostname.com -Dhttp.proxyPort=8800

Alright, I added that in, and I started the client, and it still doesn't have any Images or Sounds (I used alt+b to check, plus it has black screen).
