So then you can get a professional to set it up so you can use your iPhones internet to download, surf and play games on your computer ? My bad, I didn't know that. I thought, like the wiring for lamp posts, that the iPhones internet was restricted to a few certain things, and that if you cracked it open to get more than you paid for, it'd be like stealing.

I paid for unlimited data. I'm using it on a different medium. It would sort of be like if I paid for unlimited electricity and then proceeded to run a mad scientist's laboratory in my basement, despite the fact that my TOS specifically said I can't. It's not stealing; it's just against the TOS.

You paid for unlimited data on an iPhone. It's unlimited at that price because they know how much data you can use up with an iPhone. By hacking and tethering it you are using more, and as such, stealing. It's more like paying for unlimited electricity and then hooking up your entirely ten story building to your personal account.

I used my iPhone 3GS to tether while camping so I could play TW1.  I only used it to whittle/construct though as the lag was too unbearable to even walk.  I may be a bit of an addict.

Considering how much wireless companies rape Canadians up the bum when it comes to cell phone fees, I'm surprised we never get charged extra for tethering.  I don't have to pay any extra fees to set up a local hot spot with my iPhone.  I just have to have a data plan of at least 1GB.

Give TeamViewer app a  try.  I use  it from my iTouch.  The free individual version, not the Commercial version.

Thanks for the suggestion. I installed last night and it works fine here at the house using wifi. I will try it out today and see if it is useable out in the field. I can try it when I get to jobsites and such. Will be awesome if i can just make planks or something like that. I don't expect to get to walk around or anything but if I can atleast get something done i'll be happy.

I leave my old Dell on JTWC at home and use TeamViewer from work on weekends (where I can't set up a computer) and mainly use it to hollow peppers.

Sit on a healing tree and just do the 4 cardinal points so I can just use the arrow keys.

This analogy is much closer to the other ones you've made. However, I very rarely use the tethering, perhaps 10-20 sessions a year.

Another statement is that, when companies say "unlimited" data, they mean it, but only to a certain extent. Once you pass a certain threshold, they cripple the data connection by limiting it to something like a couple of bits per second; technically connected, but can't do anything. So it would be like hooking up your ten story building to an unlimited electricity plan that also cut off once you hit something like double the average household's electricity usage.

Again, I'm not saying it's moral or not against the TOS or anything, but it's not stealing.

Tell yourself whatever you want to make you feel better, but if the TOS does not allow for tethering, then it is stealing.  Unlimited data on a phone plan is for unlimited data on the phone.  Not your laptop.

If I had a 1GB phone plan, but I tethered, would that be stealing?

I had the "unlimited" data plan which would work as fast as the network could, but after downloading 1gb, it goes down to 64kb/s. I could tether the shit out of it and do whatever I wanted, but it would still be crap.. The iphone has a built-in connection sharing.
