See if you can't get an adapter so that you don't need the battery to keep it going. Or see if a friend has a laptop very similar and see if you can't use gmail to transmit a few gigabytes at a time to a new place.

Laptops have very little compatibility. If you can find another laptop of the exact same make & model, then yes, it'll fit.

wrong. laptop hard drives are standardized. you can get an external drive enclosure off Newegg or something and just plug the thing into another computer like an external HD
Seriously, they're standardized? I have 3 laptops, all different ages, and none of the HDs are even close to compatable. Is the standardization new? Because you'd think it'd be hard to standardize that sort of thing, considering the space-saving technology is still advancing...
