Hello Toadwateregans,

So a little while back a group of friends and I submitted to this Micro budget program that Cannes Film Festival has, in which the top 10 selected groups are given money to film a documentary that will screen at the Cannes Film Festival in France as part of a competition. We just got the email that we are in the top 20, and we now have to pitch an idea by November 21. Only the top 10 ideas will get to do it. This is obviously a huge opportunity, so we are reaching out everywhere for help.

We've had a lot of ideas, but the one we are leaning towards we are calling "The Other Dave." There is a man in Hilton Head, South Carolina named Dave, who was struck by lightening a few years ago and now can't decipher between what memories are his and what memories are from movies or books or lies. He and his family agreed to be our subject should we choose that story.

But we are still open to ideas, something really out there. No boring Occupy Wall Street or global warming stuff. So if there is an off chance anyone out there has a neat little idea for a documentary, please share any thoughts or opinions! Thanks in advance for any help!

There's not much I can think of that only requires a small budget. "The Other Dave" seems to be a great idea for a small budget and niche documentary that Cannes would be interested in.

But, as for other ideas, there's random things that just fascinate the hell out of me. I don't think they'd be appropriate for a documentary, but they could serve as a jumping point.

- Savantism (~ the Dave idea, but with other disorders)
- Disease eradication; Polio, Smallpox, Guinea Worm's, Malaria
- Currency
- Gaming culture, internet, certain memes

We pitched "The Other Dave" to the Cannes board this past Monday, the top 10 who get to make their documentaries will be announced on December 5th.  *fingers crossed*

if we do get to make it, i'm not sure if we could put it online since technically Cannes would own it since they would give us the money to make it. and it would screen there in May

We were selected! We were awarded a microgrant and have to have the documentary finished by the end of April to screen at the Cannes Film Festival!  There should be something posted online about it, I'll link when its up!

they released brief one sentence descriptions of the 11 chosen documentaries with us, for those of you who are curious

Film: through the eyes of twins.
Film: the butterfly collector.
Film: Maybe, the wheelchair dog.
Film: violin lessons from non-violinists.
Film: Dave got hit by lightning. (ours)
Film: animation phone hotline.
Film: those without the sense of smell.
Film: the life of a Maori chief.
Film: sharing coffee with 100 people.
Film: a ballet dialogue between older & younger gay men.
Film: an undocumented nurse cares for a conservative elder.

kinda vague, but all they released so far

My meteorology professor witnessed a first-hand experience of a friend of his getting hit by lightning while they were all rappelling down a mountain. Apparently, they all had survived the accident even though it was real terror.

Some of those seems quite odd like Film: sharing coffee with 100 people.

Good job getting chosen!

We have spent the last 10 days filming in South Carolina for those who have followed this, and we have wrapped filming today. There are hours of footage we need to work through, but I can say that Daves story is as fascinating as it sounded. I'll post some set pics I took on my phone tomorrow. 5 more weeks until we have to turn it into Cannes!
