I remember mining from tw1 you crawled into the mines, past low level ore, to the ore you were currently proficient at. You stood near it, hit it unit it crashed, maybe move to the othe ore spawn site, if not, waited unit it respawned.
It ate your staff alot, but once you were in, it wasn't too bad.
The current system was working if few people were mining.
You crawled around the maze looking for ore. Most of it was too high for me, but a fair amount was not. Now many people are mining (tinkering) and I have wondered around for a hour, and only found 6 or 7 ores to mine.
We need faster respawn, and more ore sites in the mines.
I admit it was great, that few people mined. I shot up multiple ranks in a few trips to the mine, but now, I can mine all the ores, but can't find any.
Is it time for some change?

I think you are confused as to how mining in TW1 worked. If someone, even one other person was in the mine, you simply couldn't mine. It wasn't a magical fairy land where ten people could mine at once.

I totally agree that the amount of mines should be enhanced, when I mine I actually want to mine, not walk. Walking isnt that much fun to be honest. If players feel the same they should post in this topic about it, because I actually asked Travis to increase the amount of mines in the mountain and got a firm No, maybe he will change his mind if more people voice up about this. To prevent some of the more unused caves to stock up on the mines, there could be a limit to the number of mines spawned in a cave determined on it's size for example.

mining sucks till you can mine all the ore.  once you can do that, passing all the ones you cant doesnt become a problem.  Travis is adding another level to the mines with harder ore I think, which will give you that feel tw1 i can only mine these ore so im stayin here.

that being said, i think the number of ore should be doubled

Why would we want to PREVENT the unused caves from accumulating mines ? If anything, we would want that to increase. It's a reward for people who go explore instead of running a boring circle.

I don't remember being unable to mine, if someone was there.
If fact I remember trying to move fast enough to mine a lump before another players crashed it.

Maybe it changed after I stopped playing.
I never mined on the new island at all. Just winter island.

I don't mind having to explore to find ore. I would just like more ore available when I do so.
I can see more ore lumps, more tunnels, or a faster refresh rate (all three)
In fact, I would like a refresh rate fast enough, that if I walk into the maze, and take all the ore I find, some should refresh in time for the return trip out.

I thought the ores respawn as soon as they're mined (elsewhere)?

You are right.
I am sorry.
At my age, a few things are bound to slip out.
